Conservative media watchdog Media Research Center (MRC) has found that Twitter and Facebook have censored content coming out of the social media accounts of President Donald Trump and accounts related to his reelection campaign at least 65 times since May 2018. By contrast, his opponent, Democratic presidential nominee and former vice president Joe Biden, has not been censored even once.
In 2018, the MRC started a new project in its Culture and Media Institute titled MRC Techwatch. The project aims to monitor instances of censorship conducted by tech giants online against conservative politicians and other personalities.
Techwatch analyzed the social media activity from Trump, Biden and people closely affiliated with their campaigns dating from between May 2018 to Oct. 16, 2020. This analysis focused mostly on social media posts and did not cover paid advertisements from their campaigns, as well as advertisements made by PACs and Super PACs that have shown their support for either candidate.
Big Tech's bias is clear and obvious.
Twitter and Facebook have censored President @realDonaldTrump and his campaign at least 65 times combined.
Yet they haven't touched any of Joe Biden's accounts even once. https://t.co/wu5rlzkxmU

Twitter is the main instigator of the censorship, representing 64 out of the 65 cases wherein Trump’s content or his campaign was flagged. They have spent the last two years policing Trump’s tweets regarding a variety of topics such as the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Black Lives Matter and Antifa rioting and even the president’s concerns regarding the safety of absentee and mail-in voting. These 64 tweets have been flagged over “public interest notices.”
MRC’s report follows an outcry over a media crackdown on a story published by the New York Post regarding emails reportedly taken from the laptop of Biden’s son Hunter regarding his business dealings with Ukrainian and Chinese companies. The recent wave of censorship from Twitter started in July 28, 2020, when Twitter deleted three tweets from the president regarding hydroxychloroquine.
Content written by the president is not the only thing being censored. Back in September, Trump tweeted an edited video of Biden playing a popular anti-police hip-hop song on his phone. The video was later deleted after it was “fact checked.” The original video showed Biden playing a popular Spanish-language song.
Several memes either tweeted or retweeted by Trump have also been deleted, including one video created by conservative Twitter personality Logan Cook, who goes by the alias Carpe Donktum, that mocked the response of the Democratic Party to Trump’s 2019 State of the Union address. The video was taken down supposedly after a copyright complaint.
In addition to the direct censoring of Trump’s content, the Twitter account for Team Trump has had four of its videos flagged or deleted. One was a pro-life video published by the campaign to support the March for Life back in January. The video, which features a pregnant woman viewing an ultrasound and parents with their newborn babies, cannot be played until after the viewer has read a message that says the video “may contain sensitive material.”
While much of the censorship occurred this year, instances of it go as far back as the beginning of his presidency. In early 2017, Twitter deactivated Trump’s personal account for 11 minutes, and in 2018 the company flagged two of his tweets with a “sensitive content” filter.
Being retweeted by the president can also harm another person’s Twitter account. According to the Daily Beast, nearly 10 percent of unverified Twitter accounts retweeted by Trump have been suspended.
Facebook has also regularly censored the president and his campaign. They deleted a video urging people to stand with Trump and to support his wish of declaring Antifa to be a domestic terrorist organization. Facebook argued that the video violated its policy against “organized hate.”
Many groups and personalities on Twitter and Facebook that have clearly violated the sites’ regulations have not received the same kind of treatment as Trump and his campaign.
For example, many pages connected to Antifa that are responsible for doxxing members of the United States Senate remain on Facebook. More egregiously, tweets made by world leaders calling for genocide have not been taken down, such as those made by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei calling for the destruction of the State of Israel.
When Twitter was questioned about this in front of a committee of the Israeli parliament, a spokesperson said that focusing on flagging down Trump’s tweets “served the public conversation.”
“We have an approach to world leaders that presently say that direct interactions with fellow public figures, comments on political issues of the day or foreign policy saber-rattling on military, economic issues are generally not in violation,” said the spokesperson.
